Challenge One Results

Welcome, one and all! To the 3rd annual-ish Challenge One results! I was going to do this last night, but unexpecting babysitting duties called, and then I just sort of crashed...but anyway, on to something you care about.
Project Polyvore is, I'm sure you've heard, a crazy intense compition, and each cycle it just gets a little bit better each time. Which means, this time around, with 20 contestants, who I though were all pretty gosh dang good this first challenge, it is going to be the most difficult season yet.
Are you ready?

Just remember, critique is given as encouragement, not as critism, or at least that is our goal. And all the critique are based of the opinions of 4 [more or less] judges, and our opinions are not the world. Anyway, please don't kill us.

Challenge One: In the spirit of the past first challenges, were going to start out with a simple styling task, one that you are probably well aquainted with-to style a little black dress. There will be 3 dresses to choose from, something not unlike the contests done at the polygroup 'Town, County, and on the Edge' if you're familiar with it, seeing as not everyone's style is the same. The purpose of this challenge is to get a sense of each and everyone of you, what you're about set-making-wise. Since everyone will be using one of 3 dresses, it's important to stand out from the rest of your competitors with strong creativity and layout design.

Now, I'm going to split up the group based on your guys' scores-the top three, the bottom three, and the in between.

Lola
Sugarette
Tripmywire
Dash
TheBradlo
and BallerinaBabe

You six represent the top and bottom three.
We'll get back to you.

The names I have not typed, you guys represent the middle ground, the in-betweenies, and are very very save for another challenge.

IN
[In order from highest to lowest scores]

Mandy- We generally really liked your set-the outfit was cute, and though I personally love the styling [great jacket and shoes! It's what made it interesting.], we weren't quite sure the bag and earrings fit the rest. Your layout is great, though with the white jacket, and open space right above it, the jacket can get a little lost.

Kellie Beth-I've never had a compition with so many mosaic sets to judge, but yours was probably the best use of space. The GOLD was the major stand out-no one else went this direction, and you had a clear sort of character. One judge felt the big white space in the purse handle was a bit disctracting.

Ellie-The one thing about mosaics in this compition, is you have to be careful about all the items-how does something fit? Does it make sense to outfit to the theme? That being said, we really loved your outfit-although we were confused on how it would be style [with two sets of shoes and all, however awesome that they were]. Good use of color! In the future, either explain the styling in the description, or use only one set of accesories.

Taylor-We really dug the non-traditional styling of such a classic dress. In real life, we're not sure if the styling would work for a very 'fashionable' outfit, but that's all a matter of personal taste, I suppose, and anyway, it makes for a cool set. Work on presentation-it's getting just a tad crowded in there.

Bluegrassgal-The colors! We loved loved the purple and turquoise-it seemd to make a black dress wearable in the summer time, with the cool colors. The shoes were the stand out. The other accesories, however, especially those on the left, are getting a bit lost.

Manda-There were mixed reviews on yours...though we all agreed that the scarf threw it off, and the dress needed something more [a necklace on top, a belt, something.]. I liked the bag, shoes, and earrings though. The layout's nice, maybe a little heavy on one side, but it's rather...plain. As one judge said "there’s no joy in this one."

Sarah-Overall, it's cute. But we feel it's lacking some creativity, some extra spark, that I know you have. The layout was just sort of nice too, but we weren't sure about the pictures...I guess there was a travel theme going on? Maybe choose pictures that reflect that.

Nik Becomes all the items are so tiny and drawfed in a mosaic background, everything is just...drawfed. Everything's even and centered well, just not the sizing, and background and pics didn't entirely make sense. Like a set previous, you had two sets of styling and we were...confused. You're cabable of more.

Soraya-What one judge said I think was dead on: "It’s an okay set, the colors are nice. But it’s not that exciting, it also looks like the items don’t really match (be careful with that). It’s not too crowded or anything, but I think you can make better use of the space."

Incubeatee- Again, sort of mixed reviews. Considering all the items you used, the colors meshed together surprisingly well, and although your theme was cute, the center of attention should've been on the dress. I love that jacket [though others didn...], but not a fan of the shoes or bag...and just as a kitpicky thing, the top monkeys could've been layered behind the jacket.

Fashionista-The belt overpowers the dress. The idea's there, it's just TOO much for all the ruffles. The pastel colors are nice, and that same balmain jacket Incubeatee works better here. But overall, it's not particuarly excieting.

The Fashion Freak-This set is very very cluttered, and it makes it hard for us to understand the styling [Though, I ADORE those spike shoes.]. Are all these little items nescessary? I think the trick with mosaic sets is to not let the little items over lap-a certain balance of blank space is needed. Experiement with this, and I think you could be great.

Elle-With mostly black items, there's something about the layering that's rather...unpleasing. It seemed like so much going on for such a small space, and the only pop of color gets lost in the background [the gloves.] Cool shoes, nice use of belt, and cool ring, but, as a judge said "Try to be more exciting without adding more items on."

Hey Hey-There's something about all these items that don't flow very well. It's okay, but, looking at your other sets, it's not your best. It needs a theme, som holding ground or color palette to hold it all together. Cool shoes though.

Alright. Thank you girls [Are there any guys?]!

Now. For the fun to begin.

Out of the six previously called names....

Tripmywire
Dash
and Lola

You have the highest scores.

Top

Tripmywire-What fabulous styling! It's very cool, very you, and for colors that could've been drab, the use of texture makes it pop. That being said, we think it was lacking some creativity to set it apart from your other sets-it's typical you and it's great, but almost...too...typical. Does that make sense? Anyway, nice even layout, and like I mentioned before. RAD stlying.

Dash-I adore this set. You took a risk by covering up the dress, but, even though some of the judges were disspointed you covered it up, I never said that wasn't allowed, and it made it stand out greatly from you competitors. It's a very cool layout too, and it's got a nice overall feel. We do think, for real life purposes, it's not really the most fashionable, verging on costumey. But for me it's just so cool that I tend to overlook that.

Lola-While it may not be your overall best, it's a stand out with the bright fun colors and funky cool styling that is very you. However, also very you is that the accesories tend to get lost in the background with very heavy, close layering. Work on balance.

CONGRADULATIONS!
YOU ARE THE WINNER OF THE VERY FIRST CHALLENGE OF PPTRES!
And, oh yeah. You get immunity next challenge! Whoo!
Risks pay off, people...well, usually. Really fantastic stuff dear.
You too, TMW. See you both next challenge. =]

On a less up beat note, the three names remaining, unfortunatley, represent the bottom three:

Sugarette
BallerinaBabe
and the Bradlo.

Bottom

Sugarette-The dressed is outshined by the pics of Christina, making the rest of the outfit seem like an afterthough-it felt very rushed. The styling can be chic, but there's really nothing creative about it, just some items through down at the bottom. It all could've gone farther...

BallerinaBabe-Black and pink tends to be very typical, and with that cutesy-trendy theme, there needs to be creative juice flowing to get it to stand out. The layout is even, but unispiring. It seemed like you didn't pit much effort into it.

The Bradlo-The accesories you chose could've been cute and creative, however, with so many colors and styles going on, it came off as a personality crisis. The picture also doesn't have a very clear theme. Otherwise, your layout is cool, however the boader style is not to everyones taste, it's something that's very you and helps you become memorable compared to your competitors.

And so, with all that said, which one of you...
...is out?

Which means, I am so so sorry Sugarette, you are out.
I hate eliminating people, and the first cut is always the worse. We're sad to see you go... If you'd like to still participate, I'd love to have you as a back-up judge, if you'd like.

Well, that's all folks. No one's too shaken up and you're all ready for the next round of madness. Believe me, it'll only get harder from here.
Happy Mother's day to all those celebrating today, by the way!
Until next week! See you then.
